Dealing with Anxiety

For years I had bouts of ‘weird attacks’ not knowing what it was! Some times I would get an attack out of the blue: my throat would tighten, I would get a choking sensation, feel hot and sweaty, my field of vision would narrow, I would get the shakes and just generally feel horrendous![/box]

I suffered with these attacks for most of my life and never really told anyone, I became really good at hiding it and adopted my own personal home-made precautions like making sure I always had a bottle of water and chewing gum at hand for the throat and nausea thing.  I also made sure I could get outside (quickly) if I needed to and did my best to recognise when it might happen.

But it wasn’t until I got into my mid 20s and after numerous trips to the doctors that I was diagnosed with having panic attacks and anxiety issues! When I was told I responded with a “Who me?! panic attack?! never!” I’m an outgoing, confident, no-non-sense kind of person so I was surprised to learn that there wasn’t a more serious physical problem at hand.

But all things said and done, the thing that helped me the most was realising that YOU ARE NOT GOING TO DIE! Sounds simple but I guess in the back of mind I really thought some thing bad was going to happen!  For example if I was on the train and I started to feel  strange’ and a bit sick and it helped me to realise that although unpleasant, being sick on the train is NOT the end of the world! And I was certainly not going to keel over and die in the supermarket if my throat tightened.

Sounds strange but if someone asked me if I suffered with stress I would probably say no! I tend not to feel stress directly, it tends to manifest itself in a panic attack or through my stomach by way of stomach upset or nausea.  Knowledge is king, so get to know yourself! I learned to pay attention  and recognise my triggers.

Sounds silly but I also found that avoiding certain foods and caffeine helped enormously!  When I limited my intake of foods high in wheat, dairy and coffee I not only felt less bloated, I also felt calmer and more focused!

Exercising also really helped, it helped me to feel rested.  Working off all the nervous energy also had a great side effect! I looked more toned and felt much better about myself!  Its odd but all those things add up to make you feel more robust and better equipped to deal with what ever life throws at you!
