Does being married make you happier?

The big white dress, the speeches, spending the rest of your life with one person, the nagging, the bickering, raising children….

Most people feel it’s a good idea to get married at least once, with some people getting married two, three or more times.

But new research shows that while marriage is not a short fix it will defend your happiness by making you more stable.  The researchers found that the happiness levels of single people when compared to married people tended to nose dive over time.

Researchers from the Michigan State University in the Department of Psychology measured the happiness levels of thousands of people in a long running study.  Their main aim was to measure whether personality helps people to adapt to married life – the answer was no.  But they did find that marriage helps to protect happiness instead of leading to a general decline in happiness, like many people would think!

So if you’re one of the many people who decide to take the plunge into married life you can do it knowing that you’ll also be taking care of your well-being!

  1. Been there, done that. =) I was married, got divorced, have been single for many years now. It feels like my happiness has been growing steadily over the years. Although, I do admit, I’d still like to have a partnership. Thanks for the read. =)
